How To Freeze And Defrost Tortilla Wraps
Tortilla wraps are a kitchen cupboard must-have in many homes around the world and it’s for good reason! They’re great for light lunches, dinners or snacks and can be used to craft a range of delicious dishes such as enchiladas, burritos and sweet cinnamon crisps just to name a few.
One of the questions we’re asked most is whether tortilla wraps can be frozen and we’re glad to say the answer is yes! Read on to explore the best ways to freeze and defrost your tortilla wraps, so you can make your next pack last even longer.
How to Freeze Tortilla Wraps
There’s plenty of benefits to freezing your tortilla wraps, the greatest being that doing so will greatly extend their shelf life! This makes it easy to always have some on hand for your next Mexican meal night. Did you know that Old El Paso tortilla wraps can be frozen for up to eight months? That’s plenty of time to make some tasty meals and snacks!
Here's how to freeze tortilla wraps to maintain optimal freshness:
- Step 1 - Make sure wraps are cool before freezing to prevent condensation and ice crystals. Ideally, try not to leave your tortillas at room temperature for too long before beginning the freezing process.
- Step 2 - Once your wraps are ready, cover each individual tortilla in cling film or a similar plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn and preserve texture.
- Step 3 - You can then place the tortillas into a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing.
- Step 4 - Label the bag with the freezing date and when they’ll expire before putting them in the freezer. If you’re using Old El Paso tortillas, the expiration date will be eight months from the date of freezing.
How to Thaw Tortilla Wraps
It’s important to defrost tortilla wraps properly to preserve their texture. After all, no one wants a soggy wrap! Here’s our top tips for thawing out your Old El Paso tortillas:
- Thaw in The Refrigerator: If you don’t need your tortilla wraps straight away, you can thaw them overnight in the fridge. Simply transfer the number of tortilla wraps you’ll need from the freezer and by morning, they’ll be good to go!
- Room Temperature Thawing: If you don’t have an entire night to wait, you can defrost the wraps quicker at room temperature. Simply leave the frozen tortillas on your kitchen counter for a couple of hours and check that they are no longer hard before use.
- Microwave Thawing: For even speedier defrosting, frozen wraps can be thawed in the microwave. To do this, remove the plastic wrap, place the tortillas on a microwave-safe plate, and cover with a damp paper towel. Then use the defrost setting for 30 seconds to 1 minute, depending on the number of wraps.
Once defrosted, your wraps are ready to be used to create something delicious. From breakfast burritos to lunchtime quesadillas or dinner tacos, the possibilities are endless.
How Long do Wraps Last?
It's important to note that the tortilla wraps should be consumed within 24-48 hours after thawing for the best experience. If you notice any discolouration, dry spots, or off smells, it's best to discard the wraps.
